This group was set up by WSCP several years ago, using funding from the Active @ 60 Campaign. It meets between 10.00 and 12.00 on the second Wednesday of each month at Margaret House in Uckfield. The pictures shown are of a small exhibition set up by the Group at Margaret House in May of this year.
As you may be able to see, the skills within the group are wide, and we do stress that the natter is as important as the art! It is a small group, and we have several members who live at Margaret House, and others from other parts of Uckfield and surrounding areas. Some members are very talented, and the rest of us try our best!
We do not provide art lessons, but Jean, our talented Group Leader, brings in a new challenge every month. However, if any of us wish to continue with a project started at a previous meeting, or to do our own thing, that is what we do!
We would be happy to have new folk join our group, and if you would like to know more, please phone Jean on 01825 767734 or Carol on 01825 762934.
Last year we marked 10 years of celebrating Older People’s Day in the UK. A booklet was issued listing all the events which would be taking place across East Sussex during September and October and copies were sent out with our August newsletter and were also available in libraries and at information centres.
We ourselves held two events:
1. Down on the farm: Friday 15 September, at Middle Farm, South Downs National Park, Firle
Some visited the working farm and all enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea in the café and a wander around the various shops and garden centre. The weather was not good but there was enough good weather to move between the various shops and garden centre without getting wet. Transport was provided by the Wealdlink bus and lifts from committee members. A good time was had by all.
2. Songs and Afternoon Tea for Seniors: Saturday 14 October, in The Ashdown Room, Uckfield Civic Centre,
Forty people booked for a full afternoon tea which was provided by the Luxford Café, part of the Civic Centre site. There was a good range of sandwiches and cakes and endless tea and coffee. Entertainment was provided by the Mayfield singers who were fantastic, playing old songs chosen by our group from their book and everyone had a good singalong. Information was on hand from the Luxford Centre, a nearby charity who offer activities for over 60s and the Community Safety Team also attended. Survey forms completed showed that everyone enjoyed themselves and we had lots of wonderful comments about the friendliness of the committee and the smooth organisation of the event. Lifts were again provided by committee members.
We also held our AGM. Unfortunately our Chair, Ivy Elsey was unwell and unable to attend and Vice Chair Linda deputised. The committee were all re-elected. We said goodbye to Heather Stevens who has left the area and welcomed Linda Blackman. Our friend Brian Lethby has returned to the committee after a period away.
Saturday October 1st is officially Older People’s Day – an International Day created to recognise and celebrate the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society. Last year seniors’ forums, the voluntary sector, community groups and other statutory organisations put together a programme of events to mark Older People’s Day 2015. Across East Sussex, events took place throughout September and October, providing a wide variety of fun activities and information. Plans are in hand for a similar programme this year and those receiving the newsletter by post or email will receive a copy of this year’s booklet listing all the events that will be taking place. The booklet can be found here:
We are hosting Wealden’s Older People’s Day in Hailsham this year. It will be held in Hailsham Civic Community Hall which is just behind Wealden District Council offices between 10am and 12.30pm. WSCP is hosting this event in partnership with Hailsham Leisure Centre. There will be a number of free activities in the Leisure centre and special offers for anyone who attends.
The event is completely free and there will be a number of information stands and some free offers. Drinks and cake will be provided free throughout the morning. Please do come along and support the event.
At the time of writing this event is still being worked on so please keep an eye on our website. If you know of any clubs or societies that offer something for older people in Hailsham or its environs who might like to have a stand then please let Jane know. There is no cost for stand holders. Jane’s phone number is 01892 655050.
